Our Story
The first dedicated horse skijoring club in California and Nevada.
Born in the heart of the Truckee Tahoe region, Sierra Nevada Skijor was founded by a group of winter sports enthusiasts and equestrians who saw a unique opportunity. We wanted to bring the exhilarating sport of horse skijoring—where a rider and horse pull a skier over snow and obstacles—to our local mountains.
Our core goal is to cultivate a vibrant, inclusive skijoring community that celebrates both our Western heritage and the spirit of high-altitude adventure. By hosting clinics, competitions, and and social gatherings, we bridge the gap between stables and slopes, creating a unique bond between skiers and horsemen.
As we look to the future, our mission is to create a legacy race in the Tahoe area. We also hope to expand our membership and establish long-term partnerships with sponsors who share our passion for the outdoors. What is Skijoring?
A fast-paced winter sport combining equestrian skills and alpine sports. A horse and rider pull a skier through a course of jumps, gates, and rhythmic obstacles at breathtaking speeds. The perfect sport to combine Tahoe's western history with ski culture.
The Typical Run
At our events, teams navigate a track between 600-900 feet. Horses reach speeds of up to 30mph as skiers hit jumps and collect rings, emphasizing precision and trust between all partners.
Safety Standards
Safety is non-negotiable. We require helmets for all athletes and conduct thorough veterinary inspections. Spectators enjoy the thrill from designated, monitored safety zones.
